It's in that very moment
when a child is brought into her life
by birth or by choice
a mother is born
Sure she was a woman before
but until she hears her baby cry for the first time
comforts a fever through the night
patches up a skinned knee
or wipes their tears
a mother doesn’t exist
It is from this day forward
she will sacrifice anything to protect her child
