Today Is Our Day...

Here's the poem I read today for the Oklahoma Crime Victims' Rights Day ceremony at the State Capitol. We had the ceremony in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Today Is Our Day...

I asked for strength
God gave me trials
I asked for courage
He gave me fear to overcome

I asked for hope
He gave me lessons in faith
I asked for confidence
He gave me defeat

I asked for wisdom
He gave me knowledge
I asked for my dreams to come true
He gave me the ability to believe

I asked for a chance
He gave me a choice
I asked for love
He gave me people to help

I received nothing I wanted
but everything I needed
and learned a valuable lesson

We can only control today
not yesterday or tomorrow
just today
today we control our actions
our words
our thoughts

And if we live today
with faith and love
it will make every yesterday
a memory of happiness
and every tomorrow
a vision of hope

Today is our day
to dream
to create
to love
to be the change
we wish to see in the world
